Tuesday, November 5th is Election Day and No School for students. KHA originally planned parent conferences on this day. Staff has been granted the day as a holiday and no school. Classroom teachers will be communicating with individual families in regards to conferences. Staff has the option to voluntarily hold conferences on November 5th and/or offer conference times to families during the month span of November. Please be on the look out for communication from your child’s teacher this week in regards to your conference date and/or any changes.
We thank you for your understanding and flexibility in advance on this matter.
At KHA we have implemented WINN (What I Need Now) Time.
WINN times are meaningful and fun while moving students forward with reading and/or math skills. WINN also ensures a positive classroom culture. This time also allows classroom teachers and specialists to work with students in small groups and/or individually on specific skills, content and/or strategies. We are working very hard on closing gaps at KHA with all of our students. We are also working on enhancing and enriching your child’s learning as well. Ask your child about all the activities that happen during WINN time!
Please reach out to your child’s teacher(s) directly for any help, support , or questions you have regarding your child’s progress.
Please keep in mind that there are numerous steps and services provided to your child prior to referring a child to special education. 504s and IEPS are available to students provided that they meet certain criteria/qualifications.
504 Plan Defined:
The 504 Plan is a plan developed to ensure that a child who has a disability identified under the law and is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives accommodations that will ensure their academic success and access to the learning environment.
An Individualized Education Plan (or Program) is also known as an IEP. This is a plan or program developed to ensure that a child with an identified disability who is attending an elementary or secondary educational institution receives specialized instruction and related services. The IEP is developed by a team of individuals from various educational disciplines, the child with a disability, family members, and/or designated advocates.
An IEP typically includes the following:
The involvement and progress of the child with a disability in the general curriculum.
All related services for which the child qualifies.
Appropriate educational accommodations necessary for the child to be successful.
The child’s present levels of educational performance.
Measurable annual goals and objectives for the child’s education.
Explicit instruction in the identified area(s) of need.
Our systems of data collection and benchmark testing are essentially “child find” measures that help us identify students who would need (qualify) for tier II and tier III supports.
(Tier I = whole class, Tier II = smaller group, more targeted, Tier III = more individual, intensive service).
Please reach out to your child’s teacher (s) for any questions or concerns about your child’s progress.
UFLI: is an explicit and systematic program that teaches students the foundational skills necessary for proficient reading. It follows a carefully developed scope and sequence designed to ensure that students systematically acquire each skill needed and learn to apply each skill with automaticity and confidence. The program is designed to be used for core instruction in the primary grades or for intervention with struggling students in any grade.
Providing educators with EVIDENCE-BASED LITERACY TRAINING, SKILLS, AND TOOLS so all students learn to read and write.

Fire, safety, and lockdown drills are necessary for the safety of students, faculty and staff. State law requires fifteen drills per year. These drills are crucial so staff and students know where to go and how to respond if there was ever an actual threatening situation. All safety procedures are reviewed annually with staff. The school will conduct 15 drills per year following the RIDE requirements.
* In an event of a fire or potential safety concern families will be notified as soon as possible with an update and instructions if needed. Please avoid contacting and arriving at the school. Our focus first and foremost, is the safety of all the students and staff in the building. Visitors will NOT be allowed in the building during an emergency situation. We have safety procedures and protocols in place to ensure our KHA students and staff are safe. We thank you in advance with your patience and cooperation regarding this matter. Please discuss with your child the importance of these drills at school.
Please call Nurse Judy or send an email to [email protected] if your child will be absent from school.
As we move towards winter, reminder to parents to refill the spare clothes kept in school in case of spills, accidents or falls in the wet weather.
Please send in a healthy snack and water bottle daily with your child.
Please get plenty of rest at night! School is a busy place with lots of learning! 🙂
KHA will be promoting RIDE’s Campaign Its #cool2 beinschool /attendance matters.
Students who are absent are more likely to fall behind in their coursework.
Attendance is reviewed on an ongoing basis with our School Nurse, Social Worker, and Administration. Communication will be sent home bi-weekly to KHA families if their child is chronically absent according to our attendance tool from RIDE. Other communication such as possible phone calls, letters, and meetings may follow as well.
Please keep in mind that school begins at 8:40 am. Students arriving after 8:40 am will be marked tardy. Tardy letters are also sent home monthly.
Please keep in mind that vacations are not considered excused absences. Please highly consider vacations according to the school calendar.
Please report your child’s absence, by sending it to [email protected].
You may also contact our school nurse with any questions/concerns.
