Greetings KHA Community!

National Bullying Prevention month kicked off this week with Blue Shirt Day

(Monday, Oct. 3rd) and KHA blue could be seen throughout the halls of KHA.

Our theme this year is based on Disney P.I.X.A.R., but we’ve put a KHA twist on the name, and this month Pixar stands for Partners In (All ways X) Acting Responsibly and staff can be seen wearing on their lanyards a circle with an X in the middle of it with the letters K, S, R, R which stands for Kind, Safe, Respectful and Responsible.

Some special activities we have throughout the month include:

  • The Bucket-filler challenge – this is based on the storybook, Have You Filled a Bucket Today? By Carol McCloud. You can listen to this story being read with your KHA bucket-filler at this link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pOJy8-OC0iU

  • Wednesday Morning Mindfulness features our very own 5th graders leading a mindfulness exercise in classrooms every Wednesday morning in October.

  • We May All Be Different but…we can be kind. This is a series of bi-monthly lunches featuring conversation starters to promote relationship building among students. Our SKPD officer/representative will visit on Oct. 19th and chat with our students in the lunchroom.

  • Popcorn Fridays – beginning this Friday, Oct. 7th, popcorn will be sold in the lunchroom for $1.00 per bag. It is SmartPop (aptly named for school) and it complies with our school’s Health & Wellness policy. Proceeds benefit the 5th grade’s big Boston trip at the end of the year.

  • Special Assembly – On Thursday, November 3rd (please note the date change), our annual Bullying Prevention month closing ceremonies will occur at KHA. Awards will be given to the students who are top bucket-fillers, and we will have a surprise guest presenter.

What is the KHA School Improvement Team (S.I.T.)? The School Improvement Team is a committee of teachers, school staff, parents, and administrators dedicated to helping improve educational outcomes for all students, and to supporting school goals. The team meets bimonthly after school to oversee the implementation of an annual school improvement plan. Consideration is given to educational issues that have a correlation to improve student achievement and that align to the KHA strategic plan established in conjunction with the Board of Trustees.

What does the School Improvement Team (S.I.T.) do? The S.I.T. builds teacher and leadership capacity and drives a culture of learning at the school. They do this by:

  1. Providing feedback on school initiatives
  2. Analyze student achievement data to help develop goals in areas of needed improvement
  3. Develop and oversee the implementation of an annual school improvement plan aimed at improving teaching and learning, and supporting school-based initiatives designed for that purpose
  4. Collect survey data of the school community to inform the work
  5. Ensure that the budget is developed in support of improved educational performance and provide stakeholder input in the spending of funds from grants or other sources of revenue.

The first S.I.T. meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, October 25th (please note the date change from my last newsletter) from 3:45pm-4:45pm in the KHA Maker Space. Parents are an important part of the School Improvement Team, please consider joining. Have questions about school? Have a vision or input you’d like to share? Join us.
